Tips on Maintaining the Toyota Highlander Brake Disc and Pad Kit in Good Condition
The brake discs and the brake pads of the Toyota Highlander SUV should be at the top when it comes to your maintenance checklist. - Brake responsibly.
Probably the simplest yet most effective advice we can give you in keeping the disc brakes in good condition is knowing when and how to brake. Sudden, hard braking puts a lot of strain on both the brake pad and the brake disc, leading to a lot of problems including charring of the brake pads and warping of the disc.
- Change the brake fluid at regular intervals.
Another way to help the brake disc and brake pads running in good condition is keeping the brake fluid levels full. Brake fluid tends to diminish over time, and even more so if you just switch to a new set of brake pads and discs. And once the fluid gets too low, it could make the brakes heat up faster or even lose power when you need it the most. Also, if the brake fluid dips significantly, it may indicate a leak in the brake lines.
In addition to keeping the brake fluid at full capacity, it is also important that it remains fresh. Brake fluid tends to spoil over time, turning its clear, yellowish tinge into a cloudy, amber color. And once it goes bad, brake fluid can make the pads and discs more susceptible to overheating and thus must be changed.
- Install brake shields on your wheel.
One of the sensible accessories you can outfit your Toyota Highlander is a set of brake shields. As its name suggests, brake shields are devices fitted inside the wheel that helps deflect excessive brake dust away from the pads and the wheel in general. This significantly helps in cutting down brake dust that makes the wheels dirty and prevent them from building up on the brake pad.
The brake disc and pads of the Toyota Highlander are a key part of its disc brake system. And, sadly, it is also among the parts that are quick to wear out. And once they show signs of wear, it is important that you buy a new Toyota Highlander brake disc and pad kit to replace your old ones.
You can have the brake discs and pads in your Highlander changed in most auto repair shops, but the process is actually quite easy enough for you to do using only a few simple tools. And in this guide, we have broken down some tips you can use in installing these parts onto your vehicle.
Tip #1: Loosen the lug nuts first before raising the wheel.
Removing the brake disc and the brake pads requires getting the wheels off the ground, but before you do so we recommend loosening the lug nuts first. You have more resistance to work against in loosening the nuts while it is still on the ground compared to when it is in the air. Using a breaker bar, loosen the lug nuts just so they start to give but not enough that they come off completely.
Tip #2: Check and clean the new disc.
Take your new disc out of the box and check it for any signs or damage or defects. Take note that the surface of the disc should be smooth and free of any imperfections. If the disc appears to be okay, spray the surface with brake cleaner to remove any grease and other chemicals it may have caught during shipping.
Tip #3: Check the pads as well.
Aside from the pads, we also recommend giving the brake pads a look as well. The backing plate of the brake pad in particular is prone to excess paint and metal from the manufacturing process, and this can prevent the pads from fitting in properly on the brake caliper. Remove these imperfections with a fine grain sandpaper and a file for those hard-to-reach areas.
Tip #4: Secure the brake caliper with zip ties.
Once the brake disc and pads have been removed, tie the brake caliper temporarily onto the underside of the car with a pair of zip ties or a string. This will prevent the caliper from dangling and causing tears on the brake line.
