With properly maintained brakes, slowing down and coming to a halt will surely be an easy feat for you. Reliable stopping power becomes even more important for vehicles used in serious or rugged tasks like towing, off-roading, and transporting heavy cargos. If you use your Ford F150 for such, then you should take more effort in taking care of your brakes so you won't have to get a new Ford F150 brake disc and pad kit sooner than expected.
Here are some tips on how you can take good care of your brakes particularly the brake pads and disc:
With everything you have to worry about each day, sure your brain will sometimes fail to remind you when it's time to service any component of your brakes. So to be sure, check your owner's manual every now and then and stick to the schedule specified on it. The manufacturer knows the life expectancy of each of your brake components, so if it says that you should inspect your pads for wear after 12,000 miles, then you have to do so as instructed. In case the pads of your F150 don't have wear indicators, you'll know when it's time to replace them if there's just 1/8 inch of less of the pad lining remaining.
Stop your habits of riding on your brakes and frequent hard braking especially from high speeds. These driving habits don't help but overuse the brakes, therefore putting too much stress and excessive wear on them.
Your F150 brakes are hydraulically operated, which means, they use brake fluid to transmit the force applied by the foot on the brake pedal to the force that actually stops the wheels from spinning. So if you want your brakes to work well all the time, always check the level and quality of your brake fluid, and change it if necessary. Check your manual for your manufacturer's recommended brake fluid replacement interval.
The Ford F-150 is built both for work and for play. With its brawns, agility, and driving spirit, the Ford pickup should have immense stopping power to rein in its power on the road. Unfortunately, after reaching a certain mileage, the Ford F150 brake pads and rotors and other Ford F150 brake parts will start to wear out. At that point, you may hear some squealing or chirping noises, feel some vibrations in the pedal or steering wheel, and smell something burning around the tires when braking. The metal-on-metal grinding and slow braking response are telling you that it is time for a total brake check and for you to go shopping for a Ford F-150 brake disc and pad kit.
Ford F-150 brake pads are basically flat pieces of steel that are layered with friction material on one side. This friction material comes in contact with the brake disc to slow down or stop the spinning of the wheels. Different types of brake pads come with unique benefits and some disadvantages.
Non-asbestos organic (NAO) brake pads are made of rubber, glass, and resin and have some metal fibers in them. Organic brake pads are light, soft, quiet, and generally more comfortable to use. They also do not generate as much dust and heat. They are easy on brake discs and are also less expensive. But because they are soft, they naturally wear out easily. They also do not fare well with high temperatures, which make their materials deteriorate faster. They are used mostly on daily road driving, for lighter loads, and in normal weather conditions.
The vast majority of vehicles are equipped with semi-metallic brake pads since they are reasonably priced, reliable, and sturdy. The brake pads are made of both synthetics and metals that form a hybrid compound. These brake pads are made from iron, copper, sintered steel, or graphite. Since a larger portion of these pads are metallic, they perform well in transferring heat from friction. Their composition also makes them highly resistant to heat and wear. On the downside, semi-metallic pads are heavier and harder. They also make more noise and produce more dust. Since they work better with high temperatures, in cold environments, they do not perform just as well. They are also harsher on discs.
Ceramic brake pads are used mostly on top-of-the-line vehicles or high-performance automobiles because of their high manufacturing cost and their superior quality. These are made from a ceramic material and some copper fibers. The ceramic compound of these pads absorbs heat from hard or constant braking really well. Ceramic brake pads are light but durable and make little noise and dust. They work well in varying temperatures.
Brake pads are squeezed against brake discs to create friction. The discs can endure intense heat and pressure but will form grooves and scores over time. Here are some brake disc designs to consider for your vehicle:
These are typically made out of iron. They have a large, smooth surface area, which makes way for excellent braking performance. They are light and affordable as well. However, they do not perform well in extended braking periods. When heat, waste friction material, and gas accumulate between the pad and the disc, this can lead to fading and warping.
These discs have spokes in the middle and look like two combined discs. Vented discs allow heat to disperse more quickly through the gaps in between. They are slightly heavier than the flat discs but generally perform better.
These brake discs have drilled holes where heat, waste material, and gas may conveniently escape. Because of the holes, the discs are lighter. The holes do not necessarily make the discs weak, but these may collect dirt and reduce the amount of heat the discs can accommodate. The discs are predisposed to cracking and warping under high temperatures.
Slots or grooves are alternatives to drilled holes on discs. The grooves or slots allow excess heat, waste material, and gas to run off freely. These, however, do not reduce the heat resistance of the discs. These brake discs, unfortunately, make more noise since the grooves may rub against the pads.
Now that you have an idea about the different types of brake pads and brake discs, you can now make a more informed decision on which kit you should get for your F-150. Look for a kit that is best suited to your driving style and to particular driving conditions, such as city or highway driving, driving in cold or hot climates, and driving with light or heavy loads. Consider the manufacturer requirements and specifications as well when shopping for a Ford F 150 disc brake replacement or any other part.
When you feel like or you notice that there’s something unusual with your brakes, you shouldn’t take chances by taking your car for a long distance drive. Instead, find your way home and troubleshoot the issue right away. While driving home, start to pay attention on how your brakes behave. The unusual sounds, smell, and sensations produced by the brakes could help determine if it’s time for you to get a new Ford F150 brake disc and pad kit.
Scraping, squealing, or clicking noise
There are several factors that could cause such brake noises, so troubleshooting may take a few hours. Such brake noises can be due to loose calipers, worn brake linings, missing anti-rattle caliper springs, or scored or glazed brake disc or rotor. With that said, diagnosing such problem involves checking the brake pads and linings for wear as well as the brake disc for glazing. The caliper should also be inspected to know if it is loose or if some of its components are missing.
Brake pedal goes too far down to stop
If you’re bothered because your F150’s brake pedal now necessitates more effort and travels too far down to stop, there could be four possible causes for this: contaminated brake fluid, low brake fluid level, worn-out brake pads, or bad brake power boost unit. To diagnose, check the brake fluid level first. If it’s below the “too low” mark, you just have to top it off. If there’s still ample amount of brake fluid, check its quality. A contaminated fluid looks dark and grimy. If the brake fluid seems okay, then proceed to inspecting your brake pads. Chances are the pads’ friction surface may have already worn down to a point that they no longer instantly create friction when pressed against the rotor. If that’s the case with your truck, then it may be time for you to get a new Ford F150 brake disc and pad kit.
Brake pulling or grabbing
Under normal braking condition, your F150 should slow down and come to a stop when the brake pedal is stepped on. If it seems like the vehicle is suddenly grabbed or pulled to one side, chances are you have worn-out brake pads or a bad brake disc. This pulling or grabbing sensation during braking is an indication that the brake pads are wearing out unevenly and may need to be replaced soon.
Brake noise is caused by a variety of things, and it's not always attributed to busted brake discs and pads. In fact, 60% of brake noise problems are caused by the absence of shims rather than bad car brakes. So if brake noise is observed during the onset of the newly installed brake disc and pad kit, it is most likely caused by insufficient bed-in or brake-in period. When this happens, the parts simply need to extend its brake in for a few more miles instead of having to replace the whole set again.
One of the most common causes of warped brake discs is a malfunctioning brake pad. Since brake pads come in direct contact with the Ford F-150's brake discs, any anomaly in its surface can physically damage or warp the brake disc. Cracked, broken, or incorrectly installed brake pads can also increase the friction and heat produced within the brake assembly. This increases temperature in the brake's environment and exposes the discs to excessive heat levels, which eventually cause warped or damaged discs. As a rule of thumb, it is best to always replace your brake assembly using a brake disc and pad kit instead of individual parts. This ensures that both your discs and pads are compatible and will not cause damage to each other while it is installed in a Ford F-150.
When installing a new brake disc and pad kit on a Ford F-150, it is important to use new mounting hardware. This mounting hardware is usually placed within the brake assembly to acoustically insulate the caliper from the assembly mouthing bracket. However, over time, this rubber or spring steel hardware tends to lose its ability to mask the sound. So as a rule of thumb, always install new mounting hardware together with the new kit. Another tip is to always clean and lubricate the entire brake assembly every time a new set of brake discs and pads are set in. This will ensure that the all other parts of the assembly are working efficiently to prevent the pads from rubbing against the vehicle's rotors.
