Shopping for Brake Caliper

Brake Caliper Shopping Info

How Much Does a Brake Caliper Replacement Cost?

An aftermarket brake caliper replacement can cost anywhere between $40 to $200. There are single brake caliper replacements and 2-wheel sets. Labor can cost you between $100 and $175. The actual costs may vary depending on the rates in your location.

Some sets may include brake pads and mounting hardware. Given the location and nature of brake calipers, we recommend hiring a licensed mechanic to replace this part.

What Is a Brake Caliper?

The brake caliper looks like a clamp that sits on your wheel’s rotors. When you press the brake pedal, a small piston compresses the brake fluid in the master cylinder. Since brake fluid doesn’t compress, the force is transferred onto the brake caliper’s large pistons, which push the brake pad against the rotors to prevent the wheel from turning.

There are two kinds of brake calipers: fixed brake calipers and floating brake calipers. Fixed brake calipers are bolted to the mount and have pistons on both sides of the rotor. Fixed brake calipers can have two to six pistons arranged on opposite sides of the rotor. Floating brake calipers, also known as sliding calipers, feature one or more pistons that are located only on one side of the rotor. When the brakes are applied, the piston pushes the entire caliper towards the inboard side of the rotor.

What Are the Symptoms of a Faulty Brake Caliper?

A bad or failing brake caliper will exhibit some of the following symptoms:

  • Vehicle pulls to one side when driving or braking
  • Brake fluid leaks from the piston seal or bleeder screw
  • Spongy or soft brake pedal
  • Grinding noises when braking
  • Uneven brake pad wear
  • Dragging sensation
