Promotions : Cooling EssentialsThe blower motor resistor controls the amount of electricity that flows through it. The amount of electricity that gets to the blower motor determines the motor's power and makes it possible to switch the air conditioner between high and low settings. Unfortunately, the resistor can run into many different problems like getting your aircon stuck on high setting, burning out frequently, and many others. Fortunately, if you know what is causing the problem and if you know how to fix it, you won't have much of a problem. For more information regarding common problems with the Dodge Durango blower motor resistor, continue reading.
A malfunctioning blower motor resistor is evident when the air conditioner starts blowing air at maximum power no matter what you do to the A/C control unit. This could mean that the blower motor resistor is burned out. The only possible fix to this situation is to have the resistor replaced with a new one. If you still can't adjust the air speed even after replacing the blower motor resistor, then the A/C control unit might be the one having trouble.
It is normal to have the blower motor resistor replaced from time to time, but if you find yourself needing to replace the thing every other week or so, then you've got a problem. If you've installed the blower motor yourself, be sure that you've done so correctly. The resistor is usually placed in the path of the blower motor's airway. This allows the resistor to be cooled down by the moving air to avoid overheating.
The wire harness could also be the culprit. Check out the wire harness connected to the blower motor resistor. Check for broken wires and make sure that none of them have their metal core exposed; this could cause short circuiting and may have led the blower motor resistor to burn out. Fix or replace the wires to solve the issue.
A malfunctioning blower motor could also cause the resistor to burn out. This happens when the blower motor pulls in too much electricity, overloading the coils and circuits of the resistor. Try cleaning the blower motor to remove any dirt that may be messing with the electrical contacts, but if that fails to fix the problem, replace the whole thing instead.
Dodge Durango blower motors resistors allow you to adjust the power of your Durango's air conditioner. By design, the blower motor only works at the highest setting. With the resistor installed, you can decrease the rate at which the motor blows out air. This is made possible by the resistor's ability to limit the amount of electricity that gets to the blower. To keep your air conditioner running without any problem, here are some maintenance tips you should know regarding the blower motor resistor:
Replace the blower motor resistor whenever necessary.
Repairs are rarely done to the blower motor resistor. Given its relatively cheap price, replacing the resistor is the practical thing to do. It would be a pretty good time to replace the resistor as soon as your Durango's air conditioner starts functioning only at the highest setting. For the 2000 Dodge Durango, the front blower resistor can be accessed under the Durango's windshield cowl, in the small opening in the center. A word of warning, you might have a little trouble replacing the resistor, given the tight space it is located in. The rear blower motor resistor is located right by the airconditioning unit in the passenger compartment. You will need to remove a number of components including the headliner, the drain hoses and the A/C housing before you can access it.
Install the blower motor resistor correctly.
The placement of the blower motor resistor in the engine compartment or at the opening of the blower motor is intended to take advantage of resulting airflow around the resistor. The resistor can get very hot, a consequence of controlling electricity flow. Without anything to cool it down, it could burn out without a moment's notice. The next time you replace the blower motor resistor, be sure to do so as directed by Dodge.
Maintain the Durango's blower motor.
The condition of the blower motor resistor will depend on whether or not the blower motor is functioning correctly. A malfunctioning blower motor could pull in too much electricity through the resistor until it overloads the unit and burns it out. If the resistors burn out often, inspect the blower motor. Cleaning the motor might make it function normally again but occasionally, replacing the whole unit might be the only solution.
