A: The fuel cap is at the place where you add fuel to the tank. Many newer vehicles (Fords in particular) don’t have fuel filler caps anymore.
That being said, you still need to know where the fuel cap is. Some older cars (‘60-’70s) have the fuel filler cap behind the license plate. 1956 Chevy Biscaynes had it behind the left tail light, believe it or not.
The cap protects the opening of the fuel tank. It prevents issues, such as spillage, evaporated fumes, sucking in air, and contaminants from entering the tank.
There is an indicator on the fuel gauge that shows the fuel tank’s location. It’s usually in the form of a gas pump with an arrow below or beside that points either left or right.
Some vehicles have a remote fuel tank cap opener on the floor in front of the driver’s seat. Pulling on the lever grants access to the fuel cap and tank.
Find the cap attached to the hatch that opens when you pull on the lever. It’s usually connected with a wire or two. If you plan on detaching the cap, use a screwdriver to pry the hinge out of the hatch.
To attach the new cap, slide the hinge back into the tab of the hatch. Note that the process might vary depending on the vehicle.
