Summary
  • SUVs are large vehicles with monocoque bodies that are high off the ground, making them ideal for off-road driving.
  • Minivans are large vehicles that are lower to the ground and have sliding doors. They generally offer more interior space than SUVs.
  • Minivans are ideal for urban driving, especially for drivers with large families.
  • SUVs are perfect for drivers who enjoy outdoor, off-road adventures.

SUVs and minivans are both characterized by their large size, tremendous cargo space, and three-row seating. They’re commonly used by drivers with large families or people traveling with big groups of friends.

Despite their many commonalities, some key traits and characteristics differentiate them. With this in mind, what makes these two vehicle types similar yet so different?

What are SUVs?

SUVs, or Sports Utility Vehicles, are characterized by their large size, three-row seating, tremendous cargo space, off-road capabilities, and excellent towing capacity. These vehicles are typically used for heavy-duty activities, capable of hauling heavy cargo across great distances.

SUV Pros and Cons

Here are some of the biggest advantages and disadvantages of driving an SUV.

SUV Pros

  • Advanced technology. Technology such as heated steering wheels and massaging seats make SUVs satisfying to drive. Modern SUVs are also equipped with many safety features such as seatbelt warnings.
  • Excellent handling. SUVs are designed for driving in difficult conditions, meaning they have more traction. They work well in bumpy terrain and stormy weather.
  • Increased height. Because of their higher ground clearance, SUVs are easier to spot and offer tremendous visibility to drivers. More ground clearance also means you’ll have an easier time driving over difficult terrain.

SUV Cons

  • Poor fuel efficiency. Because of their large size and heavy weight, SUVs use a lot of fuel compared to other vehicle types.
  • Bad for the environment. SUVs require a lot of materials to manufacture because they’re bigger than most vehicles. The fact that they have poor fuel efficiency also means increased emissions.
  • Less overall space. SUVs are spacious, but not as spacious as minivans. Despite this, you can expect more legroom and cargo space than a sedan.

What are Minivans?

Much like SUVs, minivans are large vehicles with three-row seating and tremendous cargo space. What differentiates them, however, is the fact that they’re lower to the ground and have sliding doors that make them much easier to access and enter. They can’t tow as much as SUVs and they’re not as good at driving off-road, but they’re comfortable and easy to drive.

Minivan Pros and Cons

Minivans differ greatly from SUVs, offering different advantages and disadvantages.

Minivan Pros

  • Easily accessible. One trait that distinguishes minivans from SUVs is their sliding doors. This makes entering and exiting the vehicle significantly easier. The low height of minivans also makes accessing them easier — especially for passengers who might struggle to get inside such as the elderly, the disabled, and children.
  • Incredible comfort. Minivans are generally more comfortable than SUVs because the driving experience is often smoother. Bumps on the road aren’t as noticeable, making for a more pleasant driving experience.
  • Interior space. On average, minivans offer more space than SUVs. Though the exact amount of increased space varies from vehicle to vehicle, minivans generally have more headspace and legspace. They’re ideal for large families or groups of people.
  • Quality-of-life upgrades. Many modern minivans are equipped with passenger-oriented technology to improve comfort and quality of life. This includes entertainment touchscreens, headphone support, games and streaming services, and Blu-ray players.

Minivan Cons

  • Low ground clearance. Minivans are lower to the ground than SUVs. Though this means they’re easier to get in and out of, this also means they’re unsuitable for off-road trips. They’re best driven on smooth roads and nowhere else, making them inflexible as vehicles.
  • Poor towing capacity. Towing is something SUVs are far better at compared to minivans. It’s not recommended to get a minivan if you plan on towing trailers carrying mobile homes and heavy cargo like boats.

Finding the Perfect Vehicle for You

SUVs and minivans each have their advantages and disadvantages. Some factors you should consider before choosing which vehicle type is better for you include cargo space, doors, off-road capabilities, ride height, and towing capacity.

Cargo Space

Generally speaking, minivans have more cargo space than SUVs on average. They’re not just designed to accommodate more people, they’re also designed to carry more bags and luggage in their cargo space.

On top of this, the third row of seats in a minivan can also be folded to make space for more cargo. Though it’s possible to fold the seats of an SUV as well, minivans simply offer a lot more cargo space than SUVs do.

If cargo space is a priority for you, getting a minivan is recommended.

Doors

Minivans have sliding doors that are significantly more convenient and easy to use compared to the standard doors SUVs are equipped with. It’s much easier for passengers to get in and out of vehicles with sliding doors, especially for those in the backseat. These doors are ideal for tight, cramped spaces.

If door configurations are a priority for you, getting a minivan is recommended.

Off-Road Capability

SUVs are higher off the ground and are designed for all-terrain driving, making them ideal for adventurous drivers. Minivans are weighty and have lower ground clearance, which is not ideal when driving over potholes and rough terrain.

If a vehicle’s off-roading capability is a priority for you, getting an SUV is recommended.

Ride Height

Minivans are perfect for drivers who often have passengers with restricted mobility. If you often travel with young children, disabled, or elderly passengers, getting a minivan is recommended.

Towing Capacity

Drivers who plan on towing trailers and other heavy cargo like boating equipment should consider investing in an SUV over a minivan.
