Industry experts in the United States are seeing a rise in the reliability of mainstream automotive brands with Consumer Reports (CR) naming Mazda as its most recommended car brand for 2021.
The automaker topped CR’s annual Brand Report Card, which is based on a total of 50 tests that predict reliability and owner satisfaction.
The Japanese automaker bested other manufacturers on the list for the first time, snatching the top spot from Porsche. On the other hand, Tesla slipped five spots from its standing last year due to reliability issues that reportedly overshadowed the “remarkably high scores” it received from owners. The Tesla Model 3, however, still earned the brand a “Recommended” recognition.
Most of the brands in the top 10 are non-luxury marques such as Subaru, Honda, Toyota, Hyundai, Chrysler, and Buick, with the last two enjoying improvements in their rankings. Two legacy American brands were also included in the top 10.
Aside from Tesla, Kia and Genesis also dropped from their previous positions. The latter, which has been a prominent figure in data lists for several years fell 13 places reportedly due to declining reliability. Kia, meanwhile, suffered a drop of 10 spots likely because of declining reliability in its vehicle fleet.
Other car brands that could also use improvement are Alfa Romeo, Land Rover, and Mitsubishi, which are all sitting in last place.
