When Toyota debuted Land Cruiser on the very competitive American automotive market, the goal was for it to last for several years with maintained quality and performance.
And the model is doing just that–even more–as a recent study conducted by automotive search engine and research website iSeeCars found that the Land Cruiser has the highest average ownership length of any new car in the United States.
The study covers more than 5,000,000 vehicles being sold by their original owners after an average of 8.4 years. But in the case of the Land Cruiser, they are kept by their first buyers for around 11.4 years before being sold secondhand.
Included in the top 10 list of vehicles with highest average ownership length are three other SUVs, five sports cars, and one sedan.
Tenth and the only sedan on the list is the Toyota Avalon which, according to the study, has an average original ownership length of 9.7 years. The sports cars, meanwhile, are composed of nameplates that have been around for decades: the Mercedes SL, Porsche 911, Chevrolet Corvette, and Ford Mustang. These cars, however, are usually only used as retirement cars or during the weekends, which explains why they tend to last for a long time.
What’s surprising about the top 10, though, is the absence of pickup truck models ironically marketed for their durability. The Nissan Frontier is the best performer among current brands with 9.1 years of average ownership, partially due to the truck’s slow pace in terms of model refresh and upgrades.
