Customer Guides

BD Diesel is one of select manufacturers that offer cold air intake kits specifically tailored for diesel engines, and one of an even smaller group that offers individual cold air intake parts. One such air intake component that it offers is the BD Diesel intake elbow. A key part of any cold air intake system, the air intake elbow pipe connects the air filter and its housing to the engine’s air intake manifold. BD Diesel’s elbow pipe does all these with claims that its pipes offer better airflow. In this review, we tried on the BD Diesel intake elbow on the Cummins engine of our Dodge Ram to see whether these claims are true.

Features

  • Dimensions: 22 x 15 x 9 inches
  • Larger plenum for increased airflow
  • Smooth radius turns
  • Two ports with one pre-tapped ports for easy access
  • Bolts mount outside the intake for reduced airflow turbulence
  • Available in black powder coating or aluminum finish
  • Limited 1-year warranty on parts

The pros

  • Increased mileage. During our test run, we saw our truck log in more than half a mile per gallon with the elbow installed. In addition, the exhaust gas temperatures were also cooler. We normally recorded temperatures within the 600 degree range, but with the BD Diesel elbow in place, the exhaust temperatures fell in between 500 to 550 degrees.
  • The tube is designed for maximum airflow. One of the first impressions we had when we took the intake elbow out of its packaging was how big the intake plenum was. According to BD Diesel, the extra large plenum is designed to hold extra reserve air for increased turbo response. The pipe’s smooth turns and the locations of the bolt mounts are also designed to minimize air turbulence.
  • The elbow features ports with one pre-tapped, making it easy to monitor boost, inject nitrous oxide, or add another power adder.

The cons

  • May require the installation of a performance intake manifold. The large size and increased airflow the pipe provides significantly changed our car’s drivability, so getting a custom manifold is recommended should you decide to get this intake elbow.
  • Installation can be a pain. The pipe’s exterior mounting options may allow for more air to pass through, but it comes at the cost of fitting this pipe onto the intake manifold difficult. We even found ourselves disconnecting the wires going through the fuel rail and map sensors just to get them out of our way. This is definitely not an easy job to do.

Conclusion

While it may be difficult to fit in your truck’s engine at first, the BD Diesel intake elbow surely makes up for it with increased airflow and the benefits that come with it.
