Customer Guides
You may not give your ride’s flex plate much thought until it got cracked and started to cause rattling or knocking sound from the rear of the engine and power loss at high speeds. Your ride’s fuel mileage will also suffer. So before your bad flex plate cause more serious problems that are costlier to repair, you’d better have it replaced with a new one. Since it is an important part of the engine, you shouldn’t take chances or make any compromise when looking for a replacement. In our ride, we’ve been using the BD Diesel flex plate (the Duramax black unit) for a while now, and here’s how it fared:

The upside
- Since we sometimes race our truck for the fun of it, this flex plate has been a great investment for us. We’re thankful that it is oxide coated because that means it is highly resistant to corrosion and less prone to hydrogen embrittlement, which, as we all know, is what causes cracking.
- We are impressed by how fast this flex plate has solved our issues with the old unit. During our test drive, we noticed that the rattling sound that seems to originate from the engine’s rear has been eliminated. We tried driving at high speeds and the loss of power we’ve experienced before has now become a thing of the past.
- It may be too early to assess its durability, but for the several months that it’s been installed in our ride, we can say that it’s really constructed to resist fatigue and therefore last longer than stock. During our visual inspection, we’ve seen no crack or any sign that it will soon fail.
- Its fitment with the crankshaft and torque converter is excellent, so installation was such an easy feat for us.
- Two thumbs up for the accurate gear tooth spacing of this flex plate, which means it won’t cause any damage to the starter.
The downside
- So far, we don’t have anything negative to say about this BD Diesel product, except that we didn’t notice immediate difference in the fuel mileage. The flex plate just needed a little warming up and it gradually brought back our ride’s normal mileage.
Our final thought
With its quality and performance in our automatic transmission vehicle, it is safe for us to say that this BD Diesel flex plate is up to scratch. Its construction and features somehow assure us that it is durable enough to last longer than our stock. It being SFI 29.3 certified is also an added bonus.
