Imagine you are trailing on a mountain. As you negotiate the terrain, you find yourself needing to squeeze through a series of boulders and trees. But then, you miscalculated your turn. Your rig hits the hazards therefore damaging its OEM bumper. Now comes the question: Would you rather stick to a more damage-prone OEM bumper or upgrade to a sturdier and reliable aftermarket bumper?
Off-roading is a wonderful experience but requires proper equipment. Subjecting your 4x4 to the harsh conditions of different terrains can hurt both you and your rig. Let’s see how the ARB bull bar measures up to our test. We installed the ARB Deluxe Bull Bar to our Toyota Tacoma and hit the mountain to try it out.

Pros
- ARB’s prolonged existence in the 4x4 scene has already made it a household name. We have been to its factory and witnessed crash demonstrations. So far, it has given us an assuring sense of protection. ARB has yet to give us second thoughts about its products.
- We tried subjecting the Tacoma through a rough terrain where passing through trees, ruts, and boulders is inevitable. We were able to make it with just tiny scratches on the bumper. It’s nothing a rubbing compound and paint can’t fix. There were no dents on the ARB bull bar whatsoever. But for fear of seriously hurting ourselves, we didn’t risk making head-on collisions during our test.
- The ARB bull bar does not only provide protection, but it also gives a rig a more macho appearance. It’s as tough-looking as it gets. We suggest you go for black.
Cons
- Unfortunately, all that extra armor that you equip your rig with is also excess weight. Extra pounds at the front end of your rig could mean a couple of things: the need to upgrade your OEM front suspension, heavier steering, and less-than-ideal fuel economy.
- Installation of the ARB bull bar might require you to cut some panels in your rig. This might include your front fenders and inner fender flaps.
Recommendation
Should you decide to install an ARB bull bar to your rig, we can vouch for its reliability and strength at normal off-road circumstances. However, if you want to be a little more adventurous than usual, we suggest that you take extra precautions.
