Gaining and keeping your rig’s traction off the road is one of the main challenges in 4x4 adventures. In order to address this issue, the open differential is replaced in either with a limited slip differential or locker. The downside of limited slips is that they don’t provide as much traction for 4x4 applications. Now, we are left with the lockers. The lockers equally distribute the power to the two wheels on the axle therefore making them turn in unison. The ARB Air Locker can do the job for you, but it can’t be activated without the help of the ARB Air Locker compressor. We now explore how the compressor performs in our Toyota Tacoma.

Pros
- The ARB Air Locker compressor provided the right amount of pressure to hold the ARB Air Locker equipped in our rig. It performed consistently, and it did not cause any issues when we engaged the locker.
- Aside from activating our rig’s locker, we were able to use the ARB Air Locker compressor for other functions too. In our off-road adventure for this test, we had to deflate our tires for easier maneuvering through the terrain. When we went back on the road, we used the compressor to pump air again to the soft tires. It took us about 3 minutes to fill each tire, which isn’t that bad if you’re not in a rush. It’s very functional and we didn’t have to carry an extra air pump to do just that. However, you will need to buy the tire inflation kit for this function.
- Its compact size made it easy for us to squeeze it in a tight space for mounting. We were able to manipulate the body and manifold can while finding the right position for the component. There were no clearance issues whatsoever.
Cons
- Due to its small body, the ARB Air Locker compressor tested our patience a little bit when we tried inflating 35-inch tires.
Recommendation
Should you decide to install an ARB Air Locker in your rig, the ARB Air Locker compressor will be a capable component to support your 4x4 applications. Not only will it perform to your expectation, it will also support you in other tasks on and off the road.
