Interchange Part Number : REPG288001Some aftermarket air springs and air suspension parts are designed to have the same design and function as the factory-installed parts. They are manufactured to have the same load capabilities and spring rate. If the aftermarket air suspension parts patterned their design after the original and matched the specs of the vehicle, there would be no distinct difference in ride quality.
Air springs typically last between 80,000 and 100,000 miles. Around this time, the rubber bladder starts to dry out. You may find cracks on the bottom piston. When the air springs begin to leak, that’s when compressors also deteriorate. In case of a leak, it’s best to have the air suspension dryer replaced. This will keep the air compressor working for long and will extend the life of the air spring solenoids. For the computer and height sensors, they can last as long as the vehicle’s life.
Compared to basic air spring types such as the tapered-sleeve and rolling-sleeve air springs, the double-convoluted design offers a higher load capacity and has a shorter stroke. Its spring rate is also more progressive. With this spring design, it’s best used on most front suspensions, in which the spring sits inboard of the load point of suspension. As a result, the requirements for load capacity are multiplied whereas the travel requirements are divided.
The tapered-sleeve and rolling-sleeve air spring designs are best used on most rear-end applications. These air springs come in a smaller diameter and have a longer stroke, as opposed to the double-convoluted spring design. Their spring rate is also more linear. These characteristics make them a better match for rear-end suspensions since there are less load capacity requirements and more travel requirements.
The switch to air suspension would most primarily consist of replacing the conventional springs with air springs. The upgrade of conventional coil spring suspensions can be done easily. The airbags can be slid right in to replace the coil springs. They can be bolted to bolt-in brackets made available by some aftermarket manufacturers. A good number of manufacturers offer bolt-on kits to accommodate the shift to air suspension or to incorporate the air spring design. These kits are available for coil spring cars and trucks. There are also solutions designed for leaf spring and torsion bar suspensions.
Air suspension offers a wider tuning range in terms of load capacity and spring rate. It easier to tune as compared to coil springs. The ride height, load, and rate can be adjusted or selected with greater precision, as opposed to the conventional spring. Another benefit is improved handling with its progressive spring rate and in-car adjustability. The stance of the vehicle can also be adjusted easily. Lowering the vehicle is easier with air suspension, along with raising it back up. It also helps to improve the load capacity of the vehicle while also increasing driver comfort.
Air suspension makes it easier to customize vehicle performance. It usually takes minimal adjustments and sometimes wouldn’t require any change of component. Adjustments on the air pressure and shock valving can make the car go firm and tight or make it soft and comfortable, for instance. In effect, the vehicle’s handling and performance can be suited for the track, for racing, for street use, or to the driver’s preference.
