Over the years, AEM has established itself as one of the leading names in automotive performance electronics. And one of its more popular products is the MAP sensor. Typically sold in kits, the AEM MAP sensor promises to last longer and provide a more responsive performance than stock or OEM sensors. We took several sensors out for a spin to check if they hold up to AEM’s reputation for crafting high quality auto electronics.
Features:
- High-quality sealed sensor housings
- Compatible with AEM sensor and Plug & Pin connector kits for vehicles that require additional outputs and/or upgraded hardware over existing sensors
- Includes 3-wire mating connector with 12” leads for easy installation
- Limited AEM warranty
The upside:
- Quality construction. The sensor housing is made of stainless steel, which is highly resistant to corrosion. Also, unlike brass, which is often used in MAP sensor housings, this is also resistant to acidity which might hamper the sensor readings.
- Multiple adaptor choices. We especially appreciated the mating connector and leads that were included in the package, as these saved us time ordering one online.
- Easy to calibrate. We didn’t encounter any problems during the calibration process.
The downside:
- Manual is not user-friendly. The instruction manual provided with the sensor is quite hard to understand, especially if you have minimal knowledge in automotive electronics and car repair in general.
- A bit of skill is required in installation. Aside from the hard-to-understand manual, installing the sensor took us a bit of time to do, and most of it was due to trial and error. In one instance, the sensor indicated a reading of 60psi with the engine off, although we eventually fixed the problem. It’s certainly recommended to have this sensor unit installed by a professional.
- A bit expensive. AEM map sensors can reach up to $100-$200 online, which is a bit pricey compared to other OEM sensor units in the market.
The bottom line:
The AEM sensor comes with everything you need right out of the box and gives accurate measurements, provided that you install it correctly and have the cash to burn. Installation can be a bit troublesome, although this wouldn’t be much of a problem if you plan on having the sensor installed by a mechanic. And while you will certainly get your money’s worth in quality, we wish the price would be a bit lower.
