Customer Guides

AEM offers a slew of aftermarket performance parts that can boost your car’s performance without resorting to major vehicle changes, and one such part is the AEM cam gear. A must-have for performance-tuned engines, AEM’s Tru-Time adjustable cam gears allow users to adjust cam timing by adjusting the cam profile in one-degree increments, leading to an increase in horsepower and torque. In this review, we put the AEM Tru-Time cam gear on a series of tests to determine whether it is in line with its claims or not.

Features

  • Increases horsepower and torque
  • Ideal for heavily-modified engines
  • CNC-machined 6060-T6 aluminum billet construction
  • Grade-8, six-point hex bolts
  • Integral washer flange for greater distribution
  • Available in multi-spoke, five-bolt designs
  • Laser-etched markings on the leading edge of the gear
  • Precision-cut gears minimize chances of premature wearing of the gear belt
  • Anodized teeth for extra durability
  • Manufactured and assembled in the USA

The pros

  • The cam gear is extremely resilient. The AEM cam gear is one of the strongest we’ve encountered to date. Its anodized finish creates a tough shield that resists scratches and dings, while the gears still look as though they were fresh out of the packaging even after several hours of simulated use. It’s also highly resistant to corrosion, thanks to its billet aluminum construction which, of course, also reduces its weight. This cam gear certainly balances light weight and durability quite well.
  • User-friendly. While the task of installing and adjusting an aftermarket cam gear is by no means an easy feat, AEM makes the process a little bit easier with its cam gear models. The gears have laser-etched markings that allow for precise advancement and retarding of the cam gear, while a cam gear guide included with the set offers recommended settings which you can use to achieve optimum cam timing. In addition, the hex bolts are also made of high-grade steel to withstand repeated adjustments.
  • Easy to install. The Tru-Time cam gear can be swapped easily with the stock cam gear with only minimal tools required.

The cons

  • Has a tendency of slipping. If not fully tightened, the bolts that hold the cam gear in place may start to loosen after a few miles and go all the way open. Make sure that all the bolts are tightened according to their recommended torque after installation.
  • Sold individually. We were a bit disappointed that the AEM cam gear is only sold as one piece, especially since aftermarket gears from other brands offer theirs in a set of two or more.

The bottom line

For precise adjustments and durability, the AEM cam gear certainly takes the cake. Just make sure, however, to purchase more than just one.
