Customer Guides

The boost that your turbocharger gives can mean anywhere from ample power for a freeway cruise to shaved time on the strip. Seeing your boost pressure at proper operating levels can give you a sense of assurance, at least for us. Since AEM is more known as a brand of choice for import tuners, we decided to go against the trend. We installed the AEM analog style boost gauge to Darth Vader’s car – the 1987 Buick GNX packed with its stock 3.8-liter turbocharged V6.

Features

  • Works with carbureted and electronic fuel injected engines
  • Equipped with a high quality sensor for an accurate boost pressure reading
  • Electronic stepper motor needle
  • 0-5v analog output that adapts to data loggers and ECUs
  • Bezel is available in black or silver while the face is available in black or white, giving you an opportunity to mix and match the look of the gauge
  • Universal fit

Pros

  • The black on black AEM analog style boost gauge matched the GNX. It definitely added to the Darth Vader appeal that the turbocharged G-body already has. However, we don’t think the led and digital versions would have the same effect on the car. We believe that choice would be better suited for pro-touring cars and newer vehicles.
  • With almost 300 horses and 400 lbs. ft. of torque from the GNX, we were conscious of keeping the boost pressure in check. Fortunately for us, the gauge needle was sensitive enough to give us an accurate reading.
  • We didn’t have a hard time installing the gauge on the dash and wiring it underneath. We think you will not have any issues installing it by yourself. But if you’re not confident enough, any capable shop can do the job for you at a minimum cost.

Con

  • We shelled out more than $200 for the gauge with the 0-60 psi range. The gauge maintained a factory look, which wasn’t bad at all. But we were expecting more for our attempt at a day two car with AEM’s steep price tag. It’s disappointing.

Recommendation

The AEM analog style boost gauge is actually a good piece to have in your turbocharged ride. It is both aesthetically pleasing and functional. Also, we would choose the analog type over the digital any time of the day because we perceive that it gives a more reliable real time reading. If you are resolute in having the AEM boost gauge in your car, you should be willing to turn a blind eye at the price.

What Are the Best Aftermarket Gauges To Install in Your Vehicle? Most vehicles already have a tachometer. However, some tachometers can be quite small, and the steering wheel can obscure them. An aftermarket RPM gauge positioned on top of the vehicle’s dashboard is a great way to keep engine RPM within the driver’s line of sight.
