Finding the Culprits of a Faulty Nissan Xterra AC Compressor
The Nissan Xterra AC compressor allows your vehicle cabin to be cooled and comfortable to ride in. As the car ages, its parts also do and sooner or later, the components will give up on you. So before that happens, you might as well diagnose the AC compressor to find out if it's already about time to have it repaired or replaced. Here are some troubleshooting tips that you can use at home.
Weird noises
When the AC compressor is about to get damaged, it usually makes odd noises. Listen to the unusual sounds and try to locate where they come from. The compressor of some air conditioners make use of an electrically actuated clutch mechanism that can create a harsh grinding noise when it's about to give up. It could also mean that the internal bearings have lost their lubricant, which can make awful sounds. Also, if the timing belt is loose, it will make squealing noises. Have the AC compressor replaced right away.
Used-up fuse
At the dashboard panel, inspect the fuse; you can also locate larger ones underneath the hood. Check if there are any blown fuses that might need to be replaced. You can also locate a secondary fuse panel in the engine compartment. Since they are larger, they can handle more current. If there are any blown fuses, make sure to replace them with the right amperage.
Low refrigerant level
The compressor clutch engagement should also be checked to find out if the AC compressor is busted. Switch on the air conditioner and set it to its coldest setting. Start your car with the engine on idle. Lift the hood and study the clutch, which is located in front of the compressor; check if it is turning. If it is, then your AC compressor is still in good condition. Otherwise, it means that the AC system is low on refrigerant and would not be able to work as it should. It will also start to make a ticking sound. You may need to recharge the system using an air conditioner recharge kit.
The AC compressor allows you and your passengers to be comfortable at all times especially when you take really long trips. There are some old cars that have no functioning air conditioners; imagine how they feel whenever they drive under the summer's heat! You wouldn't want that to happen to you. Clean the dirt buildup.

Maintain gas pressure.
If you switch on the air conditioner once a week for ten minuteas straight, you'll be able to maintain the right gas pressure. It will keep the hoses from hardening and AC compressor seal to fail. You can simply turn on the air conditioner to its coolest setting and highest fan speed. To clean the accumulated moisture, turn on the defrost mode for five to ten minutes to prevent any mold or bad odor to circulate in the system.
Close the windows.
Since it's really inevitable for any dust or dirt to enter the AC compressor, the best you can do is to at least try to prevent it or minimize the contaminants that enter. When your air conditioner is on, make sure to close all the windows. Also, when you're driving on a dusty trail, the glass windows should also be shut because dirt would definitely enter the system and can harm the AC compressor.
