Easy fix for the do-it-yourself person
My Installation Mods for 5 star performance: I thread top stud with an SAE 1/4-20 die and use nylon locker nut to bind, but do not over tighten. Factory stamped nuts lack holding strength and poor fit can be compensated for. Be sure latch rod with adjustment knuckle is set properly so as not to cause unnecessary stress on new handle. At least screw it clockwise one turn before inserting to shorten and compensate for wear. I also removed and discard the lead counter weight by drilling out the rivet or carefully grinding head off, finish removal with a 3/16" punch and hammer. Lay it on clean rags while doing this to prevent scratching. I've done this to a couple and seems to cause less stress on the fulcrum, much longer lasting repairs. The weight was GM's bad idea, not the aftermarket suppliers. I have found that someone trying to break into your car is a possible reason why the break. Never let the handle snap back especially if you decide to leave the lead weight on. Living in the northerly snow belt also seems to take its toll on these. Use plenty of grease, good luck with yours!
