Product Q&A

My 1997 Z3 has a very spongy clutch. It still shifts gears no problem, but there is too much play in the clutch pedal! I've tried to explain my problem to my mechanic and he replaced my entire clutch. I was pretty sure it wasn't the clutch but hoped her hit on the problem along the way. Do you have any idea what the problem is?Tam S.Mar 03, 2021
Best Answer:Hi Tam, That spongy, inconsistent feeling is due to air in the clutch line from the master cylinder to the slave cylinder. It could be a sign that clutch fluid is low. But, also, since you just replaced the entire clutch, it could be the "softness" you feel is likely the difference between a new assembly with a properly lubricated release collar and bearing vs. the crud-caked, worn out clutch you just replaced. And as long as the clutch is engaged, punching it won't matter at all.
