Shopping for GMC Coolant Reservoir
The GMC engine cooling system is composed of many interconnected parts. One of these parts, and may we say one of the most important, is the GMC coolant tank. The GMC coolant tank is a semi-transparent bottle which may be pressurized or not. As its name would imply, its primary function is to store coolant, which is often a combination of water and anti-freeze, for the cooling system. But how can a simple storage device become a very important component in a system? And if they are so important, how did older vehicles function without them?
The coolant tank is known by various other names; among them are the coolant reservoir, coolant recovery tank, coolant overflow tank and coolant expansion tank. As most of the other names would tell us, the coolant tank is used as storage for expanding coolant. The coolant has a tendency to expand as its temperature gets higher, causing it to spill out of the radiator. In older systems, this expanding coolant is simply allowed to spill out of the overflow tube. In newer vehicle systems, the overflow tube is connected to the bottom of the coolant tank, allowing the coolant to flow into it as it expands and flow back to the radiator as it cools down.
Aside from serving as storage for expanding coolant, the presence of the GMC coolant tank in modern GMC vehicles have also made coolant level checking and maintenance a lot easier. GMC coolant tanks would usually have two coolant level indicators, one marking the safe level when the coolant is hot and the other when the coolant is cool. Then, the cap of the coolant tank allows for easier and safer coolant replacement.
