Years of clamor is finally bearing fruit with the reported arrival of a turbocharged engine for the 2021 Mazda 3, at least according to a leaked document cited by online publication Jalopnik.

Since the Mazda 3 debuted, it has continuously earned the praise of enthusiasts and journalists for its styling and performance. But it has been seven years since the automaker released a turbocharged 3 for the model and fans are demanding for a newer option.

For the 2021 model year, it looks like this is going to be a possibility after a leaked model was revealed to have the code “MAZDA3 HB PP TURBO.” Fans were quick to assume that a turbo option is finally going to be offered for the well-loved sedan.

Based on the leaked details, Mazda is likely adopting the same approach it had for the Mazda 6 in developing the 2021 Mazda 3.

According to Jalopnik, the “HB” in the model code could mean “hatchback,” while “PP” could stand for Performance Package, Premium Package, or Preferred Package.

Aside from a possible turbocharged engine, the model code also suggests being paired to a “6A” transmission or what is believed to be a six-speed automatic transmission.

Based on these details, Mazda is likely adopting the same approach it had for the Mazda 6, which is a model for customers who are looking for a more luxurious and powerful model instead of a product that could compete with hot hatch models.

This also means the upcoming 2021 model is not going to be the much-awaited MazdaSpeed 3, which the company previously talked about.

Mazda refused to comment on the reports and speculations pertaining to the leaked model codes. The brand said there is nothing to confirm for the U.S. market at the moment.
