Toyota announced it is recalling Prius and Prius V cars from 2013 through 2015 model years over reports that the vehicles are at risk of stalling.

A total of 267,000 units of the Prius models are being recalled in the United States while an additional 12,000 are from Canada. According to the Japanese automaker, the problem is caused by a software issue.

Toyota said both the Prius and Prius V cars were designed to enter a fail-safe mode when a problem is detected in the vehicle’s hybrid system. But because of the issue in the software, this might not be possible. If this happens, the car’s power steering and braking will continue to function, but there is a possibility for the vehicle to stall while in motion.

In 2014 and 2019, Prius models were also recalled by Toyota due to the risk of stalling.

To fix the problem, owners of the affected Prius models are advised to bring their cars to a dealership where the software will be updated. Inspections will also be conducted to see if there had been an inverter fail and if so, Toyota will replace the inverter as necessary.

In 2014 and 2019, Prius models were also recalled by Toyota due to the risk of stalling.

Owners of the Prius models that are part of the recall can expect to receive their notifications in the mail beginning August.
