Shortly after Chevrolet launched the Tahoe and Suburban and Cadillac unveiled the Escalade, another full-size SUV is making its way into the market, also bearing an independent rear suspension as its corporate siblings: the 2021 GMC Yukon.

A subtly camouflaged prototype of the model was recently spotted looking nothing alike other SUVs from General Motors. This shows how the company is aiming to differentiate its models by giving them various styling inspirations one after the other.

The prototype spotted appears to be that of the short-wheelbase Yukon, which is equivalent to the Tahoe. The long-wheelbase Yukon XL, meanwhile, will be an analog version of the Suburban. The Yukon SUV comes with a blocky front-end design, squared-off headlights, and a striking front grille similar to the GMC Sierra.

The upcoming Yukon models are also getting their own platform that includes a new independent rear suspension. And as with other vehicles that have independent rear suspensions, the GMC SUVs will also enjoy more cargo and cabin space.

In terms of engines, the Yukon is going to be powered by the same 5.3-liter V8, an optional 6.2-liter V8, as well as an optional turbodiesel 3.0-liter inline-six.

But the similarities end there as GMC is expected to give the Yukon and Yukon XL new features exclusive to them to make the models more distinct from the Chevys. Another aspect that’s going to be different is the pricing as GMC is planning to charge extra for the 2021 Yukons, especially for the chrome-laden Denali trim that will top the range. The AT4 trim level for off-roading will also be offered and will likely be the GMC’s answer to Chevrolet’s Z71 trims.
