You’ll usually have two options when choosing an aftermarket crate engine: short block or long block. What’s the difference?

This type of crate engine has fewer components compared to long blocks. Because of this, you can have the freedom to choose which components you like added to your ride. If you’re knowledgeable about engines, you might want modified cylinder heads or if your engine is an overhead cam, you might want to opt for a more aggressive camshaft grind.
The major difference between long block and short block is the parts included in the package. The parts included in a crate engine can vary depending on the brand and the actual product you’re eyeing to buy.
Again, a typical short block engine normally includes the cylinder block and rotating assembly. They also include the camshaft, cam pistons, and connecting rods. You’ll have to buy gaskets, cylinder heads, and oil pumps separately.
Short block engines usually do not have comprehensive warranty coverage. Warranties usually cover the parts included in the original package that you bought. However, the warranty won’t cover the parts you purchased separately.
Installation for a short block engine can be more complex. Since you’ll have the freedom to customize and install other components like oil pumps, it’s more difficult to install. If you’re not a DIYer, you’d most likely prefer to have a professional install a long block engine.

Although long blocks are referred to as complete versions of short blocks, that doesn’t mean that they’re already a complete package. That’s because you’ll still have to purchase other parts like the components of your fuel system, intake manifold, exhaust manifolds, and other electric components.
A complete engine will include the manifolds, rocker arm covers, oil pan, as well as ignition and fuel system components. Typically, when a shop installs a long block engine, they use the brackets and accessories that came from the original engine that was in the vehicle.
Meanwhile, long block engines are already equipped with the valvetrain and cylinder heads. They can also come with an oil pan, water pump, and valve covers. Although long blocks come equipped with more parts, that doesn’t mean that it’s already a complete package. For example, you’ll still have to buy a separate fuel system, intake manifold, exhaust manifolds, and other electronic components.
Long block engines usually have a more comprehensive warranty. Make sure that you know the warranty coverage of the crate engine or any engine component you’d like to order before clicking check out.
Although long blocks have more components compared to short blocks, that doesn’t mean that they’re easy to install. If you’re not an experienced automotive DIYer, you’re better off paying an experienced professional to do the installation for you. An engine hoist, engine stand, engine sump pickup tube, and other complicated automotive tools are needed to do the installation.
A short engine block replacement costs less than a long engine block—that’s if you’re talking about upfront pricing. A short block engine usually costs anywhere between $1000 and $3000. Meanwhile, a long block is priced around $1,500 to $5,000.
However, you’ll most likely spend more on a short engine block because you still need to buy other components like the oil pump. The exact price of the replacement will also depend on your ride’s year, make, and model.
If you’d like a fully-dressed engine, go for a deluxe long block engine. This engine already comes with the components that you need. You’ll only have to worry about the installation process. A typical deluxe long block engine including the spark plugs and wirings.
A mechanic will usually spend around 8 to 15 hours for an engine replacement. If you’re talking about a hybrid truck or car, an experienced mechanic will usually take 8 to 12 hours to get the job done. Remember that these hours are just estimates. The exact time it’ll take to replace your engine will depend on your ride’s exact make and model and the complexity of the installation.
It depends on what’s wrong with your engine. The first thing you have to do is to let a mechanic run a full evaluation to confirm the problem. If it’s indeed an engine failure, you’ll have the choice to rebuild or replace your engine. If you’re not sure about it, you can ask a trusted mechanic for advice.
But if you’re asking which is more affordable, it’s generally cheaper to rebuild an engine than replace it—especially if you’re a seasoned DIYer who won’t spend a penny on labor. You’ll just have to disassemble the engine, locate the broken parts, and replace them.
It’s a different story if you’re dealing with a cracked bearing or you have a spun rod bearing. If the parts that need replacement end up causing more than an actual engine, then it would be better to replace the whole engine instead.
