The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recognized another high-profile model in the Ram 1500 as a Top Safety Pick+ awardee. This makes Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ bestselling truck the only full-size pickup truck to have earned the rating.
The Ram 1500, as well as other Ram truck variants, earned Good scores in all six crash tests conducted by the IIHS. But what spelled the difference for the Ram 1500 are the highly improved LED headlights.
Earlier this year, the independent institution released the results of crashworthiness tests conducted on 11 full-size truck models. Among the models tested, the Honda Ridgeline was given the Top Safety Pick award (minus the +) after a relatively good showing of its headlights despite a poor performance in one of the crash tests.
The IIHS recently started imposing stricter rules when it comes to awarding rankings, giving more importance to active-safety items like the headlights and forward emergency braking than passive-safety equipment such as airbags. Also part of this move is the agency’s insistence on brighter and more precise light beams with reduced glare.
The IIHS, however, made it clear that the Top Safety Pick+ rating only applies to the Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn and Limited crew cabs built between June 2019 and 2020, and only when equipped with the Advanced Safety Group package that includes forward emergency braking.
Additionally, the adaptive LED lights with curve and high-beam assist were the only Ram headlights that scored a Good rating out of all the headlight configurations tested by the IIHS.
