Project: Extang Solid-Fold 2.0 Tonneau Cover
Vehicle: 2015 Toyota Tundra
Installed by: Auto Parts Warehouse staff
Level of Difficulty: Easy, No tools needed
After the old family SUV decided enough was enough, I decided to upgrade to a truck, a new 2015 Toyota Tundra. Of course the truck is awesome, however it lacks the secure cargo space of my previous car a Chevy Tahoe. With having four kids to haul around the interior space was always full, no room to keep my valuables secure. I personally dislike the camper shells, so that was out of the question, not to mention how expensive the shells are. The solid tonneau covers would be too much of a hassle for me. So I looked to the folding covers as a solution.
Typical stuff that ALWAYS is in the back of my truck.
I chose to go with the new Extang Solid-Fold Cover for one reason KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) the design of the cover is really simple, three folding panels, not a whole lot that could go wrong. I have a habit of stuff breaking with me. But also the installation looks to be quite simple.
Upon arrival one thing was certain, the box was HUGE, poor delivery guy; he earned his pay today. In the box I found the tonneau cover, a bag of some hardware and some clamps, and some instructions. I did a quick opening of the cover to inspect the contents and I was surprised to see the mounting clamps already mounted to the cover.
This picture shows the clamps on the tailgate side, already pre-installed; they tuck up nicely when not in use.
I enlisted the help of a friend to help me get this thing mounted up. First we simply oriented the cover so that the side with the buckleswas toward the cab and then eyeballed it to get it centered on the bedsides.
Once centered we prepared the front mounting hardware. The front mounts up in the factory bed rail, the cover mount hooks into the bedrail, then it’s as simple as tightening it down.
With the front secure now it’s time to move to the back. I unfolded the cover to get the back mounted, but then I had to slide the cover towards the cab a bit to get it in the proper position. Simply done. So far I’m pretty impressed with how simple it was been to install: drop it on the bed, tighten some screws and done! The back mounting is super simple it literally is a spring loaded hook that grips into the bed rail as the front does. No screws, no tools, no effort as simple as pulling the handle down guiding the hook into the bedrail and DONE!!!
The Extang Solid-Fold 2.0 went on incredible simple, the cover is completely pre-assembled. It literally only took me under ten minutes to get it on, most of the time was getting it out of the box. I have to say they have done a really nice job designing this cover, goes on smooth, folds very nicely, no tools needed, heck I could have done in myself it was that easy. The quality seems spot on, no issues with the finish I actually really like the look of it, a very nice textured black looks great on my white truck.
With the tailgate closed you cannot get the cover opened, I feel comfortable leaving my belongings in the back now, and they will also be safe from the elements. There is a seal all the way around the cover, to keep out moisture, dirt and dust.
Just after I installed the Solid Fold I had to move a piece of furniture that wouldn’t allow me to close the cover completely, I nearly decided to take it completely out since how simple the install was, but I was able to fold it up and fit the furniture in the bed. The cover folds up onto itself and nylon straps secure it to the front of the bed.
Overall I would highly recommend the Extang Solid Fold 2.0 to anyone the ease of install really sets this unit apart, it took me longer to write this review than it did to install it. Looking forward to putting this this tonneau to good use.
