Rack and Pinion Gear
The rack and pinion gear converts the rotational motion of your steering wheel into the linear motion that’s necessary to turn the wheels. It’s used on vehicles equipped with rack and pinion steering.
This gear set is usually enclosed in a metal tube with each end of the rack sticking out from the tube. A tie rod connects to each end of the rack. Meanwhile, the pinion gear is usually attached to the steering shaft.
