Summary
  • Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P2440 stands for “Secondary Air Injection System Switching Valve Stuck Open.”
  • The code is logged once the PCM detects an issue with the secondary air-injection system that could point to a valve that’s stuck open.
  • The common causes of a P2440 code include a bad secondary air injection valve, a disconnected vacuum hose, a wiring issue, a malfunctioning secondary air pump, and a PCM malfunction.

Some vehicles have a secondary air-injection system that provides the necessary air for the oxidizing process that limits tailpipe emissions. The process occurs either at the exhaust manifold or inside the catalytic converter.

The secondary air-injection system has a smog pump or thermactor pump that’s either electric or driven by a belt from the crankshaft pulley. The pump pulls fresh air through a filter and pushes the air to each exhaust port through connecting hoses or a manifold. If the powertrain control module (PCM) detects any problem with the secondary air-injection system, a P2440 code will be set.

What Does the P2440 Code Mean?

Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P2440 stands for “Secondary Air Injection System Switching Valve Stuck Open.”

Notice how the diverter (switching) valve in this diagram controls airflow into the exhaust. Note that this is a rudimentary schematic, but it gets the point across. The diverter (switching) valve should be closed unless it is commanded open. When the O2 sensor detects a lot of oxygen entering the exhaust when the valve is commanded closed, the P2440 code or a similar one will be set. | Image Source: Richard McCuistian

The secondary air-injection system pumps fresh air into the exhaust system to help burn exhaust emissions as the engine warms up. Depending on the vehicle, the system may supply air to the exhaust manifolds, the catalytic converter, or both at different times. The additional air helps reduce harmful exhaust gasses through oxidation. Also, the catalytic converter warms up more quickly when air is added to the exhaust manifolds.

The secondary air-injection system has check valves and solenoids that the vehicle’s computer switches on and off. Once the PCM detects an issue with the secondary air-injection system that could point to a stuck open valve, on-board diagnostics (OBD) will log a P2440 code.

Note: The definition of code P2440 can differ depending on the vehicle manufacturer. Consult the appropriate repair manual or repair database for the exact code definition.

How to Diagnose the P2440 Code

DTC P2440 is a generic powertrain code that various vehicles can log. While this might be the case, keep in mind that the steps for diagnosis and repair can vary depending on a vehicle’s specifications.

If you’re not familiar with the process of diagnosing trouble codes by yourself, it’s best to bring your vehicle to a certified mechanic. But if you think you have enough experience with auto repair, then you can go ahead and do it yourself.

Here’s a video to give you an idea of what the process might involve:

How to Fix Code P2440

Attempting to fix a P2440 code can be a frustrating and confusing task if you’re not equipped with the right tools and automotive know-how. If you’re not confident with your DIY skills yet, it’s best to bring your vehicle to a professional to get the job done.

If you plan on fixing this trouble code on your own, make sure to have the right manuals before proceeding. Guides like those from Chilton or an ALLDATA subscription contain vehicle-specific repair information, so you might want to check those out before you start.
