Summary
  • DTC P0281 stands for “Cylinder 7 Contribution/Balance.”
  • This code is logged when the controller detects a problem with the contribution of cylinder 7.
  • Possible causes include failed fuel injectors, dirty or clogged fuel injectors, or internal engine failure.
  • The most common symptoms of code P0281 include a lit check engine light, insufficient engine power, and reduced acceleration.

Your vehicle’s engine generates power through its cylinders. Each cylinder must produce the same amount of power to achieve a balanced performance. The powertrain control module (PCM) monitors how much power each cylinder puts out and makes adjustments.

The PCM will set a P0281 code if it detects that engine cylinder 7 isn’t producing the same amount of power as the other cylinders.

What Does the P0281 Code Mean?

The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0281 indicates “Cylinder 7 Contribution/Balance.” It covers vehicles with engines that have eight (V8) or more cylinders.

Engines have several power-generating cylinders. Fixed in place for stability, each cylinder includes a moving piston connected to the crankshaft.

8 cylinder engine
The PCM will set a P0281 code if it detects that engine cylinder 7 isn’t producing the same amount of power as the other cylinders.

When the piston moves, it turns the crankshaft. The shaft transmits energy through one of the transmission’s gears. Eventually, this energy reaches the wheels and drives the latter into rotating to move the vehicle.

The process of burning air-fuel mixture produces hot gases. As these gases expand through the cylinder, they push the piston. The ensuing movement is referred to as a power stroke.

Cylinder 7 is on the same bank as cylinder 1. To make sure it generates the same amount of power, it receives the same amount and ratio of air-fuel mixture as the other cylinders.

The PCM determines how much power comes from each cylinder by measuring how fast the crankshaft rotates after the power stroke. It draws readings from the crankshaft position sensor that monitors the shaft’s position (which is also called rotation speed).

If the controller detects a problem with the contribution of cylinder 7, it will set the generic powertrain code P0281.

Note: The definition of code P0281 can differ according to the vehicle manufacturer. Check the appropriate repair manual or repair database for the exact code definition.
