Most vehicles today use computerized fuel injection systems that allow each cylinder to receive its own dose of fuel and have the appropriate air/fuel ratio changes according to the engine load. Thanks to electronic fuel injection (EFI) systems, many vehicles benefit from reduced emissions, better fuel economy and performance, and reduced instances of cold starting.
Fuel injectors are pulsated by the powertrain control module (PCM) via the PCM microprocessor. This part applies a small pulse to the transistor driver circuit, which makes the transistor conductive. Any problem detected by the PCM that involves the injector circuit may cause it to log the P0202 code.
What Does the P0202 Code Mean?
Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) code P0202 stands for “Cylinder 2 Injector Circuit/Open,” and indicates a potential problem with the #2 fuel injector circuit, like a broken wire, loose terminal, burned out injector coil, or some other circuit interruption issue.
When the injectors on an MPI unit is grounded, the injector pintle raises off its seat, and fuel flows during that very brief instant (1-5 milliseconds).
When the ground to the injector coil is released, the pintle spring snaps it back against its seat, fuel flow stops, and the collapsing magnetic field induces a spike of about 50 volts that travels back toward the ECM/PCM on that ground trigger circuit, which is designed to handle those voltage spikes. Some ECM/PCMs will measure these spikes to verify injector operation.
Once your vehicle’s powertrain control module (PCM) does not detect the expected voltage spike from the #2 injector, it triggers code P0202. Alternatively, If it doesn’t sense 12 volts on the trigger (PCM) side of the injector (coming through the injector coil from the opposite side), it can interpret that as an injector circuit fault and store the code. It varies from OEM to OEM.

Note: The definition of code P0202 may be different depending on the vehicle manufacturer. Consult the appropriate repair manual or repair database for the exact code definition.
What are the Possible Causes of the P0202 Code?
- Open in the injector wiring
- Shorted injector wiring
- High resistance in the injector circuit
- Faulty fuel injector
- Defective PCM
What are the Common Symptoms of the P0202 Code?
- Engine misfire
- Rough running engine
- Poor acceleration
- Illuminated check engine light
How to Diagnose the P0202 Code
The P0202 code is a generic powertrain code that is applicable to many OBD-II-equipped vehicles. Note, however, that the process of repairing the issues associated with this DTC may vary depending on the vehicle’s make and model.
If you’re a seasoned DIY-er who knows your way around diagnosing trouble codes, then you may check the issue yourself. Otherwise, it’s best to bring your vehicle to a certified mechanic to get a proper diagnosis.
To help you get started, here are some videos to give you some insights as to what processes may be involved in diagnosing the P0202 code:
How to Fix the P0202 Code
Fixing a P0202 code without the right tools and know-how may be a confusing task. If you’re not confident with your DIY skills yet, it’s best to leave the job to a professional. But if you think you have enough knowledge and the proper tools (e.g. scope, noid lights, etc.) to test the fuel injector yourself, feel free to tackle the issue on your own. Just make sure to consult a repair manual or repair database from credible sources like Chilton or ALLDATA for vehicle-specific information.
