As more and more automakers venture into the world of electric vehicle production, oil companies are starting to feel the effects of the EV revolution in their sales.

It has gotten to the point where oil industry players are beginning to explore the market of lubricants to cater to the needs of the so-called vehicles of the future.

Two of the biggest names in the oil industry–ExxonMobil and Valvoline–have adopted the “EV curious” mindset and are now working on new products that will be offered exclusively to electric vehicles. Prime examples are ExxonMobil’s new Mobil EV lineup and Valvoline’s EV Drive System lubricants.

Shortly after ExxonMobil announced the launch of its new EV-specific lubricants, fellow oil giant Valvoline also released a suit of its own fluids for EVs.

For ExxonMobil, the Mobil EV lineup features four product groups the company developed for the battery-powered vehicles. The products included in the new suite are thermal management fluids, lubricants, and greases.

One product group, in particular, is Mobil EV’s Cool Drive fluids, which are designed for EV reduction gearboxes with integrated electric motors. The fluids are meant to “lubricate gears and bearings while providing the necessary cooling for electric motors and power electronics.” They also work to ensure the life of EV reduction gearboxes last long.

Shortly after ExxonMobil announced the launch of its new EV-specific lubricants, fellow oil giant Valvoline also released a suit of its own fluids for EVs.

Valvoline’s products are also focused on maintaining optimal temperature for the electric powertrain, as well as grease and lubricants that are “designed for EV motors and seal bearings to control electric conductivity.”

The brand now offers EV Drive System fluids that work for multi-speed EV transmissions. They are focused on anti-corrosion effects and ensuring right temperature for motors and transmissions.
