The Nissan Frontier is entering a new saga two decades after it was launched. While the compact pickup retains its trusty frame for the 2022 model year, it also arrives with fresh bodywork, newer interiors, and updated technology.
Nissan has not revealed the complete details of the third-generation vehicle, particularly the final pricing, package options, and measurements. But based on the available information, the model will be available in King Cab and crew-cab layouts, a rear- or four-wheel-drive, as well as five- and six-foot cargo box lengths.
It will also be offered in four different trim levels: the base S, SV, Pro-4X, and the new Pro-X trim that adds a four-wheel-drive and off-roading features to the Pro-4X. Nissan also said crew cab buyers will be given the option to avail of either cargo box options, while the King Cab variant will only come with the longer bed.
The upcoming Frontier measures around the same size as its predecessor with an overall span of 126.0 inches for most versions and 139.8 inches for the long-box crew cabs. Lengths fall between 2010.2 and 224.12 inches, width at 73.0 inches, and maximum height at 72.3 inches.
Customers can also expect improvements on the suspension with the Frontier’s revised spring and damper tuning, as well as the addition of a new urethane jounce bump stops and rear anti-roll bar. With new hydraulic body mounts, Nissan says there is an improved ability to isolate the truck from the road.
Both the Pro-4X and Pro-X models will get Bilstein off-road-ready dampers as standard equipment, but only the former will have skid plates added on the front end, transfer case, and fuel tank. The Pro-4X will also feature an electronically locking rear differential as well as an off-road driving mode.
The new Nissan Frontier, however, will only be offered with a lone option: a 3.8-liter V-6 that delivers 310 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque, mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission.
The refreshed truck is scheduled to go on sale sometime this summer with prices likely to start in the $30,000 range.
