When Mitsubishi discontinued the Lancer Evolution in 2016, it channeled its efforts into the production of SUVs and crossovers. But recently, reports have surfaced that the automaker is planning to revive the model in its original sports sedan styling and not as a crossover like the Eclipse.
But if the brand brings back the model, a major update is essential because the last-generation Lancer that is still being sold in some markets date to 2007. Even if the car can still perform, it will have a hard time competing in the market without a significant upgrade.
If the rumors are true, the next-generation Lancer Evo will have Mitsubishi’s Dynamic Shield design language, which the company specially developed to provide high performance while also keeping the car and its passengers protected.
It will also share the Eclipse Cross’s front fascia that features a grille with chrome moldings on the sides, LED headlights, and distinctive daytime running lights. Additionally, it will have a two-tone bodywork with a white exterior and dark grey roof, plus A-pillars like those of the Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer Concept. At the back, a full-width light bar connects the horizontal LED taillights.
The new Lancer will reportedly share the same platform as the new Renault Megane RS, which makes 296 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. A mild-hybrid system could also be an option for 341 horsepower, which the Subaru Impreza WRX STI ST009 has. The redesigned Mitsubishi Lancer is expected to be unveiled in two to three years, to be followed by its high-performance version.
