Rumors have been swirling about how uncertain Mitsubishi’s future in the United States is. But a recent announcement from the Japanese automaker proved these baseless accusations are exactly what they are: baseless.
In its latest announcement, the company revealed four models that will come to America beginning in 2021. The group is bannered by the next-generation Outlander set to debut around this time next year as a 2022 model.
According to Mitsubishi, the upcoming Outlander will be “bigger, bolder, and better” and will feature “game-changing” elements that its predecessors didn’t have.
But if the 2022 Outlander is too far from reach, Mitsubishi is giving its loyal customers something to look forward to in the near future: the arrival of an updated Outlander Plug-in Hybrid later this year.
The PHEV SUV is reportedly equipped with a new powertrain with the capacity to deliver more horsepower and electric range than its current version. At the moment, the model in the market can go up to 22 miles on electricity alone.
Mitsubishi also said the changes will extend across all trim levels of the Outlander PHEV, meaning there is likely going to be additional standard equipment and an updated list of options for interested buyers.
On top of the regular Outlander, the automaker is also giving the smaller Outlander Sport a few tweaks for when it arrives as a 2021 model.
By the first quarter of next year, Mitsubishi is looking at two more model updates with the Mirage sedan and hatchback and the Eclipse Cross.
For the Mirage G4 sedan and the standard hatch, the company will be releasing design updates previously launched in other global markets. Both the exterior and interior will get styling changes; however, Mitsubishi said it should not affect the price of the vehicle significantly.
Last on the list is the Eclipse Cross that will also get design updates for its exterior and interior.
Mitsubishi is expected to share more detailed information on the upcoming models in the coming months.
