For the first time since Fiat Chrysler Automobiles announced its plans to develop a new generation of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the model was spotted in public. And rumor has it the new version will be bigger than its predecessor.
A spy shot of a camouflaged prototype believed to be the upcoming Grand Cherokee is making its rounds online. In the photo, the model appears to have a longer wheelbase and rear overhang for more interior space and cargo room. Slim taillights were also seen, while the brand’s seven-slot grille peeks through the covers.
But if this is what Fiat Chrysler is giving the Grand Cherokee after almost a decade, it seems lacking in all aspects. Curious consumers believe, though, that the interior might have something bigger in store.
Among popular theories for the Grand Cherokee’s in-dash tech are a 12.0-inch touchscreen seen in the Ram 1500 and more driver-assist features.
The SUV was previously revealed to be riding on the Alfa Romeo’s rear-wheel-drive Giorgio platform, which also underpins the Giulia and the Stelvio. Based on the spotted prototype, the model still has an independent rear suspension.
In terms of powertrain, the Jeep Wrangler’s turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-four hybrid is expected to be the base engine for the new model, while the Pentastar V6 with the eTorque hybrid-assist system will be offered as a mid-range option.
Aside from the upcoming Jeep Grand Cherokee, the company also announced that a plug-in hybrid version will be arriving a few years later with the EcoDiesel V6 possibly being the base engine.
The ongoing full redesign is the first for the Jeep Grand Cherokee since 2010. The upcoming generation is expected to arrive sometime in late 2020 as a 2021 model.
