Having the longest-running nameplate in the automotive industry can put a lot of pressure on the automaker each time it decides to come up with a new iteration. This is exactly what’s going on at the Chevrolet headquarters whenever the company ponders on releasing a new Chevrolet Suburban.
No amount of pressure, however, is going to stop Chevrolet from taking advantage of the popularity of the full-size SUV in the United States as it unveils the model’s newest generation for the 2021 model year.
Perhaps the most notable among the SUV’s exterior features is the front end, which shows a similar aesthetic to its sibling, Silverado. But the rear end of the vehicle is equally interesting with its unique taillights and a huge Suburban badge.
The 2021 Suburban is also bigger in size than its predecessor, growing 4.1 inches on the wheelbase and adding 1.3 inches to its overall length. Combined with a lower cargo floor, the SUV now has a maximum cargo capacity of 144.7 cubic feet. This puts the Suburban as having the most passenger and cargo capacity among all SUVs in the market.
All that space adds 2.3 inches of legroom in the second row and 2.2 inches more in the third row, complementing the sliding second-row seat feature of the vehicle.
For the dashboard, Chevrolet took a different turn for the Suburban by giving it a premium styling that is free from any semblance of the Silverado. Save for the center armrest, the entire dashboard of the new Suburban is updated. Transmission buttons are located at the left of the screen while bright LED climate control dials are found below.
The 2021 Suburban is also offered with a new diesel engine. The 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel inline-6 makes 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, which the company expects to churn out decent fuel economy numbers. Most trims, though, come with the standard 5.3-liter V8 that makes 355 horsepower. The range-topping High Country trim, meanwhile, is available with a 420-horsepower 6.2-liter V8. All engine options are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive.
The 2021 Chevrolet Suburban is expected to go on sale in mid-2020 and will be available in six trim levels: the LS, LT, RST, Z71, Premier, and High Country.
