Fuel-economy numbers for the 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel are finally out and they are far more impressive than expected for a full-size truck.
Since Ram announced the upcoming release of the model, curious spectators have been on the lookout for the official EPA ratings of the truck.
With the truck’s rear-wheel-drive setup, EPA rates the 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel at 22/32 mpg city/highway, making it the most efficient model in the lineup. The numbers are similar to those of the Honda Accord, which comes with a 2.0-liter turbo with a manual transmission.
For customers who prefer the four-wheel-drive setup, however, the fuel-economy rating is at 21/29 mpg, which is still worth noting considering the model’s size.
The truck comes with the new 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 that boosts its efficiency, especially in terms of highway fuel economy, more than the previous generation EcoDiesel. The V-6 makes 260 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque and is exclusively mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Based on these numbers, the rear-drive variant of the upcoming Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is better by 2 mpg in the city and 5 mpg on the highway than the outgoing generation. And when compared to its rivals such as the 2020 Chevrolet Colorado, Ford F-150, and GMC Sierra 1500, the 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is comfortably seated at the top half of the group.
The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is the only full-size pickup truck to beat the Ram in fuel economy, but only by 1 mpg in city and highway driving on a rear-wheel-drive setup and 2 mpg in the four-wheel-drive setup.
The 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel has a starting price of $38,585 and is expected to go on sale before the year ends.
