It’s been a while since self-driving cars were introduced in the market, but a lot of Americans are yet to accept them on their roads. Understandably so, since there are valid contentions to the safety of the technology.

However, over the last couple of years, it seems that more people are embracing the presence of autonomous vehicles in America. Several companies led by Tesla have proven they are worth their salt with the benefits of these advancements.

The most recent development in this undertaking is with Motional, a company in the business of building driverless cars. Backed by Hyundai and Aptiv, Motional just received the approval of the state of Las Vegas to launch autonomous vehicles. While this does not exactly mean the company will go straight to rolling out self-driving cars on the road, it gives Motional the permission to do so once its technology is ready.

With the backing of Hyundai, as well as Aptiv, it might not be long until Motional launches its autonomous vehicles.

The approval from the local government of Nevada allows the company to join other companies such as Yandex and Waymo to showcase the technology and commence with testing. Motional’s CEO Karl Iagnemma said they are ready to begin the tests as soon as this year.

Said Iagnemma in a statement: “The coming months will see the completion of a rigorous, self-imposed testing and assessment period… in close partnership with one of the world’s most respected safety assessors. This process will include full-driverless testing, on closed courses, this year.”

After testing, Motional will have a better idea of what needs to be done to ensure that its driverless cars won’t compromise people’s safety on the roads. And with the backing of Hyundai and Aptiv, it might not be long until the startup launches its autonomous vehicles.
