Mazda is expanding its crossover lineup for the 2020 model year as the much-awaited CX-30 finally makes its North American debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Along with the official reveal of the model, the automaker is also showcasing updated versions of the CX-5 and CX-9.
The CX-30 is joining the Mazda lineup slated between the CX-3 and CX-5 on the brand’s Skyactiv-Vehicle Architecture, which is similar to the newest generation of the Mazda3.
In Europe, the new model can be availed with Mazda’s Skyactiv-X engine. But since the engine, as well as a diesel type powertrain, will not be coming to the United States, the CX-30 is presumed to be getting a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Either that or a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with an automatic or six-speed manual transmission, as suggested by a filing with the California Air Resources Board.
Following the 2020 CX-30’s official launch in LA, it is expected to arrive at dealerships in the succeeding weeks. The crossover has an entry-level retail price of $26,135, making it $740 more expensive than the previous generation. But it now includes rain-sensing windshield wipers and automatic headlights as standard features.
For other trim levels, the CX-30’s Grand Touring is getting paddle shifters, while the Grand Touring Reserve is offered with a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. It also comes with off-road traction assist.
Additionally, Mazda is making its i-Activsense safety suite features optional, which include a radar cruise control with stop and go, automatic high beams, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, and automatic braking with pedestrian detection.
Contrary to the amount of information released about the 2020 CX-30, Mazda only has few words to say about the updated CX-9. The crossover was previously revealed to include second-row captain’s chairs, a hands-free power liftgate, and a nine-inch infotainment screen in place of the eight-inch display found in the 2019 version.
