What is a MagneRide suspension? MagneRide is a suspension system that uses magnetorheological (MR) fluid rather than hydraulic fluid or oil in its shock absorbers.
The MR fluid container has tiny magnetic particles, which means the fluid’s viscosity and flow rate can be controlled using electromagnets.
Magnetic suspension systems in cars are unique because they can offer adaptive dampening, which means the system can fine-tune its shock absorber’s characteristics depending on road conditions and driving inputs in real time.
MagneRide isn’t the only company that makes magnetic suspension systems, but it’s one of the most popular and renowned.
MagneRide suspension’s MR fluid is made from iron particles and synthetic hydrocarbon oil. Like a regular shock absorber, the MagneRide shocks have a piston that pushes fluid through holes. The main difference with MagneRide shocks is that they have two electromagnetic coils that adjust the fluid’s ability to flow through two small fluid passages inside the piston.
Activating the electromagnet causes the fluid to create a fibrous structure through the fluid passages, limiting the fluid’s ability to flow. Adjusting the electromagnet’s strength will affect the iron particles, causing the fluid to become more viscous, effectively making the suspension stiffer. If the electromagnet isn’t turned on, the fluid can freely flow through the small fluid passages, which means the shock absorber will freely compress.
Changing the current that flows to the electromagnet instantly changes the shock absorber’s characteristics. A stronger current stiffens the suspension and a weaker current softens the shock absorber.
The MagneRide system uses sensors that detect vehicle body roll, driving inputs, and other variables. MagneRide systems include a computer that constantly analyzes information from vehicle sensors and adjusts the shock absorber’s stiffness thousands of times per second. The computer determines the best setting to achieve the best performance or comfort, depending on the driver’s settings.
Traditional suspension systems have dampers that only have one set dampening rate. This means if the suspension is tuned to be stiff, such as in a race car, then there’s no way to adjust the shock absorber’s characteristics without replacing the dampener. Meanwhile, MagneRide suspension systems can allow the driver to change the vehicle’s driving characteristics, making a vehicle feel stiffer or more comfortable with a push of a button.
MagneRide’s ability to stiffen dampening whenever necessary can improve a vehicle’s handling performance in corners and braking without making the vehicle ride too harshly.
Some suspension systems from other brands can offer adjustability by giving the shock absorber the ability to close passages, restricting fluid flow, and stiffening the suspension. However, these systems are slower than MagneRide, which can change a dampener’s characteristics instantly through magnetic fields.
Despite MagneRide’s performance benefits, the system is much more expensive. Companies like Chevrolet demand a $1,895 premium fee to add the suspension system to the Corvette sports car. Meanwhile, the GMC Yukon only equips its highest-end trim model with the MagneRide suspension.
MagneRide is also much more complex. It requires sensors and computers to function properly. Meanwhile, traditional suspension systems are simpler, easier to maintain, and cheaper to replace.
Traditional shock absorbers weren’t able to have both comfort and performance. MagneRide’s ability to adapt its stiffness allows it to provide a smooth ride and achieve good handling characteristics at the same time.
Many modern vehicles are equipped with driving modes that can work in tandem with the vehicle’s MagneRide suspension system. Driving modes such as normal, sports, or off-road modes can set dampening to respond to expected driving conditions and terrain. Drivers can even further fine-tune the vehicle’s stiffness if they want.
Many vehicle types can use MagneRide suspension systems. Luxury sedan brands like Audi and Cadillac use MagneRide to improve their vehicle’s comfort and refinement while giving the option of a sporty driving experience. Meanwhile, brands like Chevrolet and Ferrari implement MagneRide to make their sports cars stiff and handle well while still giving them the comfort to be good for everyday driving. Ford and Range Rover use MagneRide for off-road vehicles, allowing the vehicle to have better control and comfort on rough trails and uneven surfaces.
