Customers eager to get a diesel Jeep Wrangler in the coming model year must be prepared to pay an additional $6,000 to the SUV’s starting price, a report circulating in JL Wrangler Forums claims.
For the 2020 model year, the Jeep Wrangler will come with a 3.0-liter diesel V6 engine, which costs extra $4,000. However, the engine will only be offered with an eight-speed automatic transmission, which costs an additional $2,000.
But while the V6 engine equipped in the Wrangler EcoDiesel is pretty much the same as the engine powering the Ram 1500, the Wrangler engine has a different intake and exhaust.
Given the changes to the engine, the Wrangler EcoDiesel is down to 260 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque, 38 lb-ft less than that of the Ram’s.
The diesel Wrangler comes with Dana 44 heavy-duty axles, which are standard on all trim levels, as well as an 18-gallon fuel tank.
However, a unique exterior is not its strongest suit as it may be difficult to distinguish a Wrangler EcoDiesel on the street. The only huge difference it has over the other Jeep Wrangler is a small badge on the rear hatch.
Fuel economy and tow ratings for the Wrangler’s diesel edition are yet to be released. But interested buyers who don’t mind forgoing utility for more torque can expect the new variant to go on sale before the year ends. A plug-in hybrid option is also reportedly in the works, although the company has not released any details about it.
