Everyone knows by now that Jeep is ushering in new changes in its lineup. One of these is prepping the Wrangler 4xe Hybrid for debut for the 2021 model year.
The model is the very first Wrangler to feature a plug-in hybrid drivetrain powered by a 17-kWh battery pack that provides up to 25 miles of electric-only range. It will also come with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors, combining over 400 miles of total range with 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque.
By these numbers alone, it is touted as the most powerful Wrangler variant in the lineup until the Hemi-equipped Rubicon 392 model becomes available. And as the figures reveal, the automaker’s earlier estimates of 350 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque were very conservative.
Jeep says the upcoming model is its most technologically advanced Wrangler in history. Its battery pack, which weighs around 280 pounds and will be mounted behind the rear seats of the four-door Unlimited variant, is also the first of its kind to provide emission-free on-road and off-road open-air driving experience. It’s definitely looking good for Jeep on paper.
Jeep has begun the production of the Wrangler 4xe at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ Toledo Assembly Complex, which means the wait will not be for long for interested buyers. Despite the complexity in its design and architecture, the 4xe is confirmed to be joining soon the other models in the Wrangler assembly line.
The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe is expected to arrive at dealerships in the United States beginning early 2021. Final pricing details for the vehicle are yet to be announced, but it’s confirmed it will be available in three trim levels: the 4xe, Sahara 4xe, and Rubicon 4xe—all of which qualify for a federal tax credit.
