Jeep just announced it is recalling over 30,000 units of the Wrangler and Gladiator models due to an issue with the manual transmission.
According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the two models were equipped with clutch pressure plates that could be at risk of overheating.
A total of 33,237 models are affected by the recall, which covers the 2018 to 2020 Wrangler and 2020 Gladiator.
In the event that the clutch pressure plate overheats, fractured pieces could crack the transmission case. Once the debris penetrates and comes in contact with ignition and fuel sources, there is a possibility of a fire. Passengers may also experience the car suddenly losing power.
Some of the signs of the problem include a burnt clutch smell coming from the car or extra clutch pedal travel when shifting into another gear.
Jeep’s parent company, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, said it is still working on a possible fix for the problem; however, it announced that the recall procedure will begin on April 22.
Owners of the affected SUVs and pickups can expect to start receiving recall notifications by mail around that time.
