Are you getting sick and tired of the same old candlelit dinner dates? Don’t get us wrong, they’re certainly romantic and intimate, but there’s more to romance than sharing a meal in a restaurant filled with twenty other couples. Having a car can unlock new and creative ways to spend date nights, and what better way to do so than by getting inspiration from romantic movies? Impress a new flame or spice up your current relationship by recreating these iconic car scenes from your favorite films.
“Say Anything” (1989)
What better film to start with than arguably the most iconic car scene from the late 1980s? While “Say Anything” features several scenes shot in Lloyd Dobler’s (played by John Cusack) 1976 Chevy Malibu, there’s one scene in particular that stands out.
After Diane Court (played by Ione Skye) breaks up with him, Lloyd earnestly stands outside her house with a giant boombox playing a special song in their relationship. It’s like a modern-day version of the balcony scene between “Romeo and Juliet,” except Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes” is blasting in the background.
If you want to impress your date, why don’t you set the mood by playing a special song for her? You can even grab a boombox and play it outside her house. Just make sure to keep the volume to a minimum to keep her neighbors off your back!
“Titanic” (1997)
Years have passed, but James Cameron’s 1997 romantic epic is still one of the most popular films in history. In “Titanic,” Jack Dawson (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose DeWitt Bukater (played by Kate Winslet) find a 1912 Renault Type CB Coupé de Ville, where they share a steamy exchange in the backseat. It’s their first and last time together before the Titanic hits an iceberg that upends the ship, but it’s a beautiful moment that will always be theirs.
We aren’t telling you to get frisky in the backseat like Jack and Rose did. There are obviously public indecency laws against that, but you can still spend a meaningful night together in your car. Invite your partner to a car camping ground, where you can spend a romantic evening under the night sky. If you own a car with fold-flat seats, you can prepare a sleeping pad where you two can cuddle. You can even recreate the bit of roleplaying the tragic couple do at the start of the scene.
“Twilight” (2008)
If your date’s a “Twilight” fan, then you’re in luck. As someone who grew up around car enthusiasts, author Stephanie Meyer made sure to include plenty of iconic car scenes in the franchise. You’ve got plenty to choose from. However, among the intense car chase scenes and almost collisions, there’s one that stands out.
After a late-night trip to the bookstore turns awry, Bella Swan finds herself surrounded by a group of creepy guys. Luckily, vampire heartthrob Edward Cullen swoops in to save the day in his Volvo C30. The atmosphere is tense as Edward drives Bella back to her friends, but it also allows them to get to know each other much better.
The next time your partner’s in a bind, don’t think twice about swooping in to save them. Whether it’s because they missed the last bus or got caught in the rain, they’ll surely appreciate the effort you put in. During the ride home, you can even sneak in a hand touch when your partner tries to change the music, just like Bella did.
“Grease” (1978)
If you and your partner share a love for musicals, then the ending scene in Randal Kleiser’s “Grease” is the one. Bad boy Danny Zuko (played by John Travolta) and good girl Sandy Olsson (played by Olivia Newton-John) get their happy ending after a series of misunderstandings. With the drama settled, the gang sings “We Go Together” as Danny and Sandy fly off in their 1948 Ford De Luxe.
Unfortunately, you won’t find flying cars on today’s market, so you can’t fly off into the sunset with your bae just yet. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t drive away with your loved one after a big musical number.
Why don’t you gather your friends and surprise your lover with a big musical number during an anniversary or birthday? You can even end the song by leading them to your car and driving them to a drive-in theater, just like the ones in “Grease!”
“To Catch a Thief” (1955)
In Alfred Hitchcock’s romantic thriller, Frances Stevens (played by Grace Kelly) drives John Robie (played by Cary Grant) in her blue 1955 Sunbeam Alpine. They stop at a shoulder overlooking the coast of the south of France, where Frances reveals that she prepared a picnic basket for the two of them.
There’s no shortage of scenic drives to enjoy in the US, so why don’t you invite your date to a road trip and picnic rolled into one? You can head to the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia and North Carolina, where you can even go camping or hiking. You can also drive down the Pacific Coast Highway in California, a long, winding journey that can take around 10 hours to complete but is worth it thanks to the old pioneer outpost and roadside picnic spots.
“When Harry Met Sally” (1989)
Compared to the other films on this list, “When Harry Met Sally” doesn’t exactly feature a singular car scene. However, the main characters, Harry and Sally, meet for the first time when a mutual friend suggests they share a ride to New York City.
Stuck together for hours in Sally’s 1976 Toyota Corona Wagon, they gradually get to know each other better. The journey brings the two of them closer together, slowly but surely leading to one of the greatest love stories ever.
You can certainly take a page from their book about love and invite your date on a road trip. It’s a great way to get to know one another better while making new memories together. Decide on a route, set the date, and get the snacks ready for a road trip that might just change your life.
