The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) regularly releases the names of models and manufacturers that managed to earn its highly coveted Top Safety Award. The IIHS is one of the few regulators that conduct comprehensive safety tests for vehicles, especially those that are yet to go or just went on sale.

When the IIHS awards its Top Safety Pick (or Top Safety Pick+) rating, there is a level of assurance for customers, which is why manufacturers choose to go through the painstaking process of taking the tests. For its recent batch of recognitions, though, only one American truck was successful in getting the recognition.

For the second consecutive year, the Ram 1500 earned IIHS’s Top Safety Pick award. More specifically, its popular Crew Cab model, which is equipped with the brand’s Advanced Safety Group suite.

According to IIHS standards, a vehicle must be equipped with Pedestrian Automatic Emergency Braking to be qualified for the Top Safety Pick award. Not only does the Ram full-size truck have the technology, it also scored an “Advanced” rating during the tests.

“A Top Safety Pick for the Ram 1500 solidifies our long-standing commitment to our customers through advanced technology and engineering expertise,” said Mike Koval Jr., Ram brand chief executive officer for Stellantis.

Moreover, the truck also has a sensor-fusion Automatic Emergency Braking system that combines camera technology with radar sensors. Its main purpose is to determine a potential imminent frontal impact with another vehicle. It also boasts of the ability to send multiple alerts to the driver or automatically deploy the vehicle’s brakes in case the driver does not respond.

The two systems, along with Lane Departure Warning-Plus, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring with trailer coverage, and adaptive cruise control, are part of the Ram 1500’s Advanced Safety Group.

In addition, the Ram 1500 also scored “Superior” for its automatic emergency braking, which is also available as standard equipment in its Laramie, Rebel, Limited Longhorn, and Limited trims.

“A Top Safety Pick for the Ram 1500 solidifies our long-standing commitment to our customers through advanced technology and engineering expertise,” said Mike Koval Jr., Ram brand chief executive officer for Stellantis. “This validation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety builds consumer confidence in our truck and in the Ram brand.”
