Ever since the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) introduced higher standards for doling out its Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ recognitions, more and more automakers worked on improving the active safety features of their cars.

Results of the brands’ initiatives are evident in the latest list of Top Safety Pick (and +) awardees IIHS released for the 2021 model year. A total of 90 vehicles were named on the list, a significant jump from 2020’s 64.

The Top Safety Pick+ recognition is awarded to vehicles that meet the same requirements while having their above-standard headlights equipped across all trim levels.

The agency requires vehicles to have a Good rating for all six crash tests conducted, plus  Superior or Advanced in automated braking tests. Meanwhile, the Top Safety Pick+ recognition is awarded to vehicles that meet the same requirements while having their above-standard headlights equipped across all trim levels. Among the 90 vehicles on the list, 41 earned the Top Safety Pick award and 49 others took home the Top Safety Pick+ plum.

The inclusion of 90 models in the pool of Top Safety Pick winners expands the list of vehicles that are deemed safe for customers. Some of the most familiar names on the list include the Kia Telluride, Sorento, and Seltos; Mazda 3, CX-30, and CX-9; Toyota Corolla, Camry, and RAV4; Hyundai Sonata, Tucson, and Palisade; Ford Escape, Explorer, and Edge; Nissan Sentra, Maxima, and Rogue; Chevrolet Equinox; and Ram 1500.
