Hyundai is one step closer to getting a Top Safety Pick Plus recognition from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for its Venue crossover. But for now, it will have to settle on a Top Safety Pick award.
The automaker’s smallest crossover was recently awarded a Top Safety Pick recognition by the IIHS after earning a “good” rating in six crash tests conducted by the agency, as well as “advanced” and “superior” marks on the vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention.
When it comes to the headlights, however, the Hyundai Venue only got an “acceptable” or “good” score, which, according to the IIHS, is what kept the model from earning the Top Safety Pick Plus rating.
The agency hands out a Top Safety Pick Plus award to vehicles that score at least a “good” rating in the six crash tests conducted, “advanced” or “superior” ratings for the vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention, and an “acceptable” or “good” rating for the headlights.
For the Venue’s case, its optional LED headlights were given an “acceptable” rating, but its standard halogen lights only received a “marginal” mark.
“The base headlights—halogen projectors—rate marginal due to inadequate illumination on curves,” the IIHS shared in a statement.
If the automaker decides to release the LED headlights as standard equipment on the Venue in the future, there’s no question the crossover will earn a Top Safety Pick Plus award from the IIHS.
With or without the recognition, though, the Hyundai model still has notable crash-prevention features despite its size.
