Hyundai Expands Warranty Coverage

Hyundai is making car ownership more convenient for its customers as the company announced it is expanding warranty coverage and adding free maintenance to its services.

For all new vehicles, the Korean automaker will now offer factory-scheduled complimentary maintenance for the first three years or 36,000 miles. This move is considered unusual among non-luxury manufacturers but a welcome change for customers.

The factory-scheduled maintenance will reportedly include oil changes, filter replacements, and tire rotations. It will cover the 2020 Hyundai models purchased on February 1 or later.

Prior to the announcement, Hyundai is already known as one of the automakers with the most competitive warranty coverage on the market. The coverage originally included a warranty on the powertrain for 10 years or 100,000 miles and a limited warranty of five years or 60,000 miles.

This gives Hyundai a very competitive edge over its rivals Toyota and Volkswagen, with Toyota only offering complimentary maintenance of two years or 25,000 miles and Volkswagen with two years or 20,000 miles.

GM brands, meanwhile, are behind in the game after the company dialed down on warranty coverage last year. Instead of the original complimentary maintenance plans for three years or 36,000 miles, GM now only covers the first maintenance visit.

The updated warranty terms bring Hyundai closer to the likes of Volvo, BMG, and Genesis in terms of the length of coverage. However, Lincoln and Jaguar are still leading the industry with a warranty of four years or 50,000 miles and five years or 60,000 miles of complimentary maintenance, respectively.

Hyundai’s sister company, Kia, is also offering the same warranty coverage; however, there is no confirmation if Kia is also planning to include complimentary maintenance in its coverage.
