Hyundai is hyping the upcoming release of the redesigned Elantra for the 2021 model year with two teaser images and a short video revealing the compact sedan’s new look.

The design updates mirror those of the Elantra’s bigger sibling, the Sonata, particularly a more daring styling compared to the model’s previous generations.

Hyundai also says the 2021 Elantra will ride on a new platform that will make it longer, lower, and wider than the current model.

The outgoing version of the sedan was released in 2017 and received a design update in 2019. And while this life cycle is relatively short, it shows that the automaker is serious about competing with its direct rivals in the segment, namely the Honda Civic and the Toyota Corolla.

The three manufacturers are trying to get a bigger share of the compact-car market following the recent exit of the Chevrolet Cruze and Ford Focus.

According to Hyundai, the new Elantra marks the model’s return “to its sports-sedan roots,” although the company did not clarify what it exactly means by the statement.

All six previous generations of the Elantra were all mainstream compact sedans and hatchbacks, with some sporty styling details. But for the upcoming model, the styling seems to suggest more athleticism.

Hyundai has also not mentioned how the new Elantra will affect the Elantra GT hatchback, which recently received a styling update.

The 2021 Hyundai Elantra is expected to make its official debut on March 17 via live stream.
