The exit and re-entry of the Hummer nameplate in the United States automotive market is a rare feat of its kind. Of the many brands in the industry that abandoned their assembly lines in the past years, not all managed to mount a revival with such great fanfare.

One then would wonder how it was possible for Hummer, especially since it is making a comeback only as a sub-brand of GMC.

In an interview with online publication Muscle Cars & Trucks, Duncan Aldred, global vice president for Buick and GMC, shared that things just happened for Hummer.

According to Aldred, the company was in the process of developing an electric “super truck” before engineers decided the model is better off showcased as the new Hummer EV.

Clearly, it was a good decision.

Boasting 1,000 horsepower and around 1,000 lb-ft of torque, the refreshed Hummer is well on its way to global success. Other notable features of the truck include the Watts to Freedom capability, the unique Crab Walk mode, and removable roof panels.

With these cutting-edge upgrades, it’s no surprise the Hummer EV’s Edition 1 model sold out hours after its official launch, notwithstanding its $112,000 price tag.

GMC plans to release lower trim levels beginning 2023. However, the “base” model won’t be out until 2024 with a starting price of $80,000.

An SUV variant is also set to arrive, although it will likely be part of the GMC brand instead of the Hummer sub-brand. GMC is expected to share more information in the next few months as the vehicle approaches production.
